Wrist Pain Treatment in Steele Creek, Charlotte, NC
What Is Wrist Pain?
Wrist pain can make typing, lifting, gripping, and other everyday tasks uncomfortable or difficult. Discomfort may come from the joint itself or from the tendons, ligaments, and nerves that pass through the wrist, and it is often connected to how the elbow, shoulder, and neck move.
At Urgent Chiropractic of Steele Creek, we evaluate your wrist, your grip, and the joints above it to identify what may be contributing to your symptoms and develop a personalized, non-surgical care plan.
Common Symptoms of Wrist Pain
Wrist problems can present differently depending on the injury or underlying condition. Common symptoms may include:
- Aching or soreness in the wrist or hand
- Sharp pain with gripping, twisting, or lifting
- Swelling or tenderness around the joint
- Stiffness or reduced range of motion
- Weakness or a tendency to drop objects
- Clicking, popping, or catching sensations
- Numbness or tingling in the thumb, fingers, or palm
Numbness and tingling that follow a specific pattern in the hand often point to nerve involvement rather than a joint or tendon problem.
What Causes Wrist Pain?
Wrist pain can result from a single injury, from repetitive stress, or from a condition affecting the joints, tendons, or nerves of the hand and forearm. Common causes may include:
- Repetitive strain from typing, tools, or manual work
- Carpal tunnel syndrome and median nerve compression
- Tendonitis or tendon irritation
- Sprains from a fall or sudden impact
- Arthritis and joint degeneration
- Ganglion cysts
- Sports or lifting injuries
- Nerve irritation originating in the neck or elbow
Because the nerves that serve the hand travel from the neck and through the elbow, wrist symptoms are not always caused by the wrist itself.
How Is Wrist Pain Diagnosed?
Evaluation typically begins with a review of when your symptoms started, the activities that aggravate them, previous injuries, and your work or training demands. Your provider may examine the wrist for swelling and tenderness and assess range of motion, grip strength, and nerve function in the hand.
Because hand and wrist symptoms can originate higher up the arm, the elbow, shoulder, and neck may also be examined. When appropriate, additional diagnostic testing or imaging may be recommended to determine which treatment options are appropriate.
